Extreme Makeover Builds Home for Navy Veteran in Fayetteville, NC
Posted on: Jul 20, 2011
Last Thursday, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition landed in Fayetteville to rebuild the home of Barbara Marshall,a Navy veteran who takes in homeless women veterans as part of her program Steps N Stages. The original home was over 40 years old and had only 1,600 square feet – too small to accommodate the large number of veterans Marshall hoped to assist.
In 2009, Marshall established the Fayetteville branch of Step N Stages using her own money and home. At the Jubilee House, residents are provided with training and support to help them become homeowners and professionals. The program also reaches out to homeless veterans and their families living in Cumberland, Harnett and Hoke counties by arranging food deliveries, housing, counseling and transportation.
Hundreds of volunteers turned out to give their time to the week-long project, working around the clock to finish the home where Marshall, two children, and five women veterans will reside. On July 17, the city held the Heroes, Hearts and Hardhats Music Festival, raising $8,800 for the cause. The benefit included local musicians, food, and children’s activities. Others contributed by donating supplies and food for the workers, as well as books and furniture for the home.
Although her appearance is closed to media, First Lady Michelle Obama will attend the ‘Move That Bus’ reveal, which is scheduled for July 21. The new home is a two-story log cabin design, with each room laid out to easily transition as different occupants filter through the home. The episode is set to air in October during the show’s 9th season.
