The Town of Calabash got its name from the calabash gourd, that when dried can be used as a bottle, bowl, ladle, and well pretty much anything. It’s is a small fishing town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, but it wasn’t always that way. In 1940 Calabash was nothing more than a small town on the Calabash river where people lived off the water. Due to its proximity to water people learned quickly that fishing in the Calabash River and selling their catch at the local market can make them a good living. It has evolved quickly to adopt catching and cooking seafood as its local identity.

Sitting on the banks of the Intercoastal Waterway, Calabash prides itself as the “seafood capital of the world” because of its abundance of “calabash-style” seafood restaurants; so you’ll be sure to get your fair share of seafood in this town.
